Transmission gears will not engage and grinding noise when shifting to park in 1991 ford ranger

made a noise, then stopped engaging. Stopped driving for about 5 minutes then the gears engaged for about 10 miles and then stopped engaging. shifted to park to stop vehicle and made a loud clanging noise. Now no longer engages gears now. Can shift gears but will not engage

internal failure. it will have to come out and disassembled to find the failure. it will need to be rebuilt.
