1991 Chevrolet Silverado Not sure what this is!

Cleaning and changing the transmission pan and filter, and this was in the filter hole stuck, bought a new filter to change it and the little piece isn't with it, so what can this be?

I have to be honest. I've been into transmissions for nearly 30 years and have never seen something exactly like that. To me, it appears to be a screen to filter new fluid via the dipstick tube. When new, there is a similar type item what is placed in the tube that is to prevent dirt from getting into the transmission during production.
