engine starts popping when it idles?

My 1991 chevy s10 2.5 engine has started popping when it idles. I don't have a muffler on it, so could that be the problem with it? It idled fine without the muffler for a few months then it started popping.

Iron duke 2.5 151 inline 4 engine

It sounds like you might have a flat camshaft, please inspect the lobes and get back to me
