Oil pan and gasket replacement

Hello,

Car listed above is a LX model. Was under my car and was wrapping up a rack and pinion job when I realized the gasket on the oil pan was leaking. Planning to replace oil pan and gasket, is there a diy or diagrams I can refer to? I have a general idea but want to do the job correct. My questions are: what type of sealant do I use on the gasket and where should I apply the sealant on the gasket? Any tips for removing the cover for the fly wheel cover and any tips for reinstalling?

Good morning,

I attached the procedure for you to follow for the removal.

It shows where to apply additional sealant for the oil pan installation as well.

Roy

Caution: Remove the drain plug carefully if the engine is hot, to avoid scalding.

1. Drain the engine oil. Replace the oil filter.
2. Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer. Do not overtighten.
3. Remove flywheel cover or torque converter cover.
4. Remove the retaining nuts and bolts.
5. Carefully pry the oil pan from the block.

NOTE: Do not bend the oil pan.

6. Install the oil pan with a new gasket as shown.

7. Tighten the nuts and bolts as shown.

NOTE: Tighten the nuts and bolts in two steps and torque them in a criss-cross pattern.
Torque: 14 Nm (1.4 kg-m, 10 ft lb)

8. Install flywheel cover or torque converter cover.
9. Fill crankcase with 4.0 qt. oil (includes oil filter capacity).

Does the Honda bond go on the hump area between block and gasket or between the pan and gasket or both? Also would I need to remove shifter cable cover as well as the flywheel cover? Any tips for installation of pan and gasket? Gasket first and then pan or both together and install bolts?

Okay, Honda bond on the pan and then the gasket. Then install on the block.

Awesome, thank you, just wanted to make sure. Also, I remove the 3 12 mm on the shifter cable cover and then the 3 10 mm on the flywheel cover correct?

I got the old pan out and put the new one in with gasket and Honda bond but the gasket area by the bolt I circled which is the first one you torque, that area of gasket ends up spreading out too much. The first time I torqued to 9 ft lbs and it really squeezed the gasket and I didn’t like that and gasket wasn’t straight in that area so I removed pan again, cleaned everything, put fresh Honda bond and put the bolts back in by hand then following the sequence I started to tighten but the same thing happened in this are and it isn’t even torqued down. Do I need another gasket?

Yes, replace the gasket again. Once it squashes it is no good.

Thank you, took your advice and purchased a Felpro one. so far everything looks good and I did it by hand not too tight and will torque if needed but I tightened in the sequence. Didn’t go too tight on the same nut I circled because didn’t want it to get squashed. I plan to take the car for a drive tomorrow and then I will know if there are any leaks. Hopefully there is none.
