No power to starter

Recently experiencing no electrical power to starter. After engaging clutch a few times it does function. Yesterday, for no reason, I put gear shift in neutral and it operated normal. Have done at least a dozen starts since, placing in neutral. My question is: What is malfunctioning; and is it necessary to replace a part? With over 209,000 miles, I'd like to avoid any unnecessary repair bills - but on the other hand I don't want to get stranded. Thanks

Start at the clutch switch, starter relay, starter motor and ignition switch-make sure the battery and connections are in good shape-

I had already checked with a garage on this prior to posting. They ruled out all that was recommended in the answer post - other than the possibility of the clutch switch (which they will replace for an estimated $125). The question I am not getting answered is why is it starting faithfully when the gear shift is in neutral? I wasn't aware (and it seems the mechanic I spoke to wasn't either) that there is a transmission switch on a manual. Help!
