I'm replacing my timing belt on my 92 Mighty Max w/ a 2.4 liter. I noticed that there wasn't a smaller timing belt on my truck. Is this belt even needed ? There is no signs of any broken belts .

On this vehicle, there is only one timing belt. Is there another belt that appears missing?

it's a small belt that goes on the crank behind the main belt. It goes to a small pulley on the left side of the engine as you are looking at it.

O.k. I'll try this again. There is also supposed to be a small belt coming off of the crank . It is a part of the timing belt kit and the manual says it should have one. But there isn't one on the truck What is the purpose of this smaller belt ?

When I put the timing belt on I lined up all three marks dead on then install the belt. When I put it all back on however the engine just spins. Which spark plug is the one for top dead center?

the second belt is required it is a balance shaft...used to balance the engine.without it at high Rpms or even a very long drives the vibration motor puts out, can and will damage the motor.you can find the timing marks on the gears as well as the housing.
It is very hard to get all the timing marks to line up but it can be done...remember do not turn the camshaft in reverse rotation it will damage the valves.so to answer you straight up get both belts. i'm surprised the person you got the big timing belt from didn't know that

I'm replacing my timing belt and in the kit there are 2 belts. But when I removed the cover on motor , there is only the main one. The smaller one isn't even there. I was told it's a tensioner belt , but this truck has ran a long time without it. Is it really needed ?

1988 mighty max 2.0L engine when I check the timing the timing mark is advanced way off and I cant adjust it back to 8 degrees was wondering if the ecm is faulty and is advancing the timing like that

The ignition timing is not computer controlled and is adjustable by turning the distributor. If it is out by too much, most probably the distributor or timing belt are not aligned correctly.

I just bought this mighty max it didnt pass smog because of the timing on the crank shaft pulley was at 75 degrees so i had the engine rebuilt and thought that that would solve it but its still the same it runs good idk if the guy i bought it from put a different pulley im stuck.

Hi Fernando_u,

Yes this happens with a motor swap from time to time, remove the #1 spark plug, roll the engine to TDC by the piston not the timing mark, once the piston is at the top, create your own TDC on the dampener, while blacking out the incorrect mark, that should do the trick, let me know how it goes.

Best, Ken
