I have a 1989 Toyota corolla. This morning it was spitting an sputtering, if i kept it in first gear around 25 mph it would run ok, but if I tried to shift or give it more gas it would try to die. Finally it just quit running. I did a test on the fuel pump and it is still getting fuel. I pulled a plug wire off, stuck a screw driver in there an propped it on a metal bracket, cranked it over and no spark. I'm guessing it is a coil issue but I wanted a second opinion. Any ideas?

No sparks can be an ignition coil or related component fault and you need to perform test to find out. Check out the above link for more information.
