At 11 O-clock behind the crankshaft sprocket there is a nipple on the
housing. Also there is a small V notch cut into the tone wheel behind
crankshaft sprocket one tooth to the left of Keyway for crank. Line up these to get crank @ TDC. Much faster than reinstalling cover and using timing marks.

For camshaft sprocket, refer to diagram.

I just bought a 1989 Toyota Camry with a V4 engine and 134,000 miles. I've been told that the timing belt should be changed soon, yet costs for such a procedure that I've been quoted seem high. Is changing a timing belt on an '89 Camry a difficult procedure, and what is a good price to get it done?

Hi there , The crankshaft should be at TDC No1 cylinder and the cam has a hole that you align with a scribed mark on the backing plate, view line through hole to check alignment, see pics. mark (mhpautos)

what is the timing for a timing belt? There's no timing for the belt if you're trying to replace it-you need a book for a gude. The igniton is the one that needs tiiming. The timing belt's job is to open and close the valves-

Hey the timing belt just went out on my Camry I was just wondering comparatively how hard is it to change on this particular vehicle. I know that the replacement itself is not for the faint of heart and I most likely will not do it this time but was just wondering what exactly I would be getting into if I did.

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

If you have never done a timing belt before, you may have some problems as getting the front pulley off is a problem if you don't have the required tools, doing the job is not the complex a good work shop manual will give you all the pics and info you will need, now the bad news, if you have a 3FS-E fuel injected engine, you may have bent a few valves when the belt broke, this will require the head to be removed to repair this, best get a mechanic to check it out for you first.

Hi there,

Just re checking the timing belt guide and it says engine damage will normally occur if the belt fails, and in my experience that is the case.
