HOW DO YOU GET TO THE MOTOR AND THE LINKAGE THAT DRIVES THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR? DO YOU REMOVE THE METAL WORK UNDER THE WINDSHIELD?

Yes you do. I wish I could find a picture of it. Open the hood to take it off as German cars always have hidden bolts and screws. The rubber seal across the cowl just lifts off. You should start to see screws at this point.
