Aloha, recently my girlfriend was driving her 1989 Mazda 323 hatchback when it suddenly "slipped" into neutral, and wouldn't engage any gear. I adjusted the shifter linkage, and I changed the filter and tranny fluid, but still no engagement of any gear, and I was noticing that I can move the shifter lever without engaging the brake pedal. Any correlation? And more importantly, any ideas on what the problem is? Fixable?

Thanks for your time!!

When you changed the fluid was there a lot of debris in the trans pan? Also what color was the fluid?Being able to take it out of gear with stepping on the brake has nothing to do with the no gears.Sounds like a failure inside of the transmission.

Bring it in and have it pressure tested by a transmision specialty shop to find out more what's going on-
