The truck drivers fine but it won't shift into overdrive the switch on the dash lights up and goes off like it works but it won't go into overdrive

This vehicle has a very basic computer system, but it can still provide helpful info. Have you checked to see if there are any trouble codes?

No I haven't I've been to the part store and they where no help they didn't know how to tell me how to check the codes but the engine light is on

Most parts stores are lost if it isn't an OBD2 system.
It's really simple.
Within five seconds, switch the key from off to the run position 3 times (on, off on, off, on. The 3rd time, leave it in the run position (engine off).
The "check engine" light will flash.
Each code is a two digit code, so a code 23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (longer pause before next code)
The system will end with a code 55 which is normal.
Write down the numbers as the occur.
NOTE: A code 33 is normal on earlier models without AC, so don't be alarmed. As I mentioned, a 55 will be the last one you see.
Do this and let me know what you find. It's going on midnight here, so I have to get to bed, but I'll be back tomorrow night.

Ok I did the code check and got a bunch of different numbers the two that I think might have anything to do with my problem is 25 and 34 Maybe u could educate me on these two numbers please and thank you very much

Code 25 -- automatic idle speed motor driver circuit, short or open detected. This device is responsible for maintaining the engine idle speed. An open circuit is basically the same as a cut wire. No power is getting to where it needs to be. Shorted means power is going straight to ground.
Code 34 -- speed control servo solenoid, open or short detected. I question if this has to do with the OD. This is for cruise control. Basically, the system thinks there is an open winding in the system. Even if your truck doesn't have CC, the computer circuitry and software for the cruise control system is installed in the ECM.
