Sounds like the shifter cable snapped from the pressure. Watch to see if the lever moves on top front of the transmission when a helper moves the shift lever. If it doesn't, the engine won't start unless you manually move that lever to park or neutral. It should start if it's really in neutral. I suspect it's not.

That lever is going to be pretty hard to move by hand unless it's already out of park. Then there won't be any pressure holding it so it will move easily.

So if it snapped i have to get it in the shop right? I wasnt sure if it was a 5-10 minute fix or a job that needs to be done by a professional

You have to look to see what's wrong. In rare cases the end of the cable might become disconnected at the transmission lever. It's a metal rod with a 90 degree bend on the end that pops into a nylon insert. If the rod popped out, it will likely do it again unless that insert is replaced. You will see that metal rod move when a helper moves the shifter inside the car.

If nothing moves under the hood when the shift lever is moved, the cable is most likely broken. Replacement can take about an hour. It's easiest to figure out when you have the new one in hand to look at. The end under the hood is bolted to a bracket on the transmission. The end under the dash is accessed by removing the "knee blocker". That's the panel under the steering column. I can't remember how it's attached there. I only replaced one and that was a long time ago.
