1989 Camaro that idles great. When I put it in drive it stalls. I can drive it when I power brake it at a stop. The mechanic is saying that the computer might be the culprit but he is not sure.

The mechanic is saying it might be the computer. He is not sure so I have to pay another 200 for a solution that might not work.

When I have my foot on the brake while i am giving it gas is my definition of powerbraking. Not to much gas that I am spinning the tires but enough to keep it from stalling. I put the car in neutral when i come to a stop and it idles fine. I put my foot on the brake and put it in drive and give it some gas to keep it from stalling. Sometimes I am to slow and it stalls through the turn.

Hi,
I have the same promblem like yours on my '92 RS Camaro,2 years ago I replaced my old engine(260'000) whit a new one,new TBI unit, replaced all the sensors, fuel pump,IAC,EGR,distributor and spark plug wires too.
The first 3 months it runs like a missile, now it stall at idle speed.
Perhaps it is an ECM or Eprom problem, the ECM wires I have tested are ok,anyway the problem persist.
Still reaching the problem....

Have you checked the mass air flow sensor?

Yes,I have interchanged the MAP with my other car ('89 Firebird 305 TBI),the last week I have also interchanged the ECM unit and Eprom from Firebird to Camaro, now the Camaro engine run little"fresh",good power wen I put the gas but......still stall on idle!
In drive and in reverse.
Note:when I have interchanged those ECM,on Camaro,I have just made a "reset" to mechanical idle and the same I made on the IAC,I also added a new Throttle Position Sensor.
Now,under my Camaro I have a new coil ready to try, perhaps on the next week-end I'll do it.

Right,I make a mistake!
But,the mass air flow sensor is on the TPI injection system, not on TBI,or what?

On the next days I redo a sensor-ground test,an ECM wires control,ESC Volt and vacuum test and last, wen I found a fuel pressure meter on ebay,I test that pressure(fuel pump in fuel tank changed two times after that problem..new fuel filter added too....)
Don't leave me now...:-/
