I have a 1989 Buick Lesabre. It isn't making any ticking noises, but it is making a whirring noise like a bomber plane. I have to constantly push on the gas to get it to go. I can't go over 45 mph without it sounding like it is going to explode. I have replaced all the fluids. The funny thing is the coolant I had to replace 2 times. This morning it started fine and had no problems going any speed limit... no noise. However, the whirring noise came back as if the car was struggling to go the speed limit and the temp gauge went on. What is the problem?

check your EGR valve settings...I have the same problem. I replace my EGR w/another used EGR. That worked for about 1 month...back to the same original issue. I am just not ready to keep dumping more $Money into it...257,000 miles...still reliable but not much book value left. Hope this helps

Make sure coolant and ATF are not mixing. I'm questioning if there is a leak in the radiator and coolant could be getting into the trans causing it to slip.

...that might be a possible cause-effect...my transmission shifts quite well @all levels...I think it's still the EGR...fuel,O2 & recirculating waste fuel via the EGR. I believe there are 3 combinations of valves within the EGR...so one of those combinations...low rpm zone from about 10 mph to 30 mph...especially climbing small hills or needing a rapid start from a stop signal...just No low end acceleration !!!
