The auto shop had a problem after changing out my timing belt that cause them to replace the heads on my engine. Can the problem with the timing belt cause a hair line crack in my number 5 cylinder. Before going to the shop, the car did not smoke or backfire. The took the car to the shop because it would idle itself down from time to time but not constant.

How do you know there is a hairline crack and where is it in the cylinder?

I was told by the shop that the valve in the number 1 cylinder was bent. The hairline crack in cylinder number 5 - when facing the car from the front is at 3 oclock.

Could the problem with the timing belt also effect cylinder number 5?

Bent valves indicates the timing belt installation was not done correctly but it should not cause any cracks, especially if it is on the cylinder liners.

You have the cylinder heads off?
