how to tell if the speedometer or the speed sensor is bad

my speedometer doesn't work. how can i tell if i need to replace the speedometer or the sensor?

Check the VSS 1st, if it test out then you go to the speedometer assy

A diagionstic scan will normally show up a faulty speed sensor, this code will not set a check light, do a scan first.
