1988 gmc sierra is burning way too much fuel you can smell gas in the exhaust

How long since a tune-up? Any applicable mil codes? Use a gage and check fuel pressure. See if pressure holds after pump stops, you may have to block the return line. Some of these systems have an internal pressure bleed off.

If you have TBI you should be able to see injector leaking, where applicable.
