What would cause a engine knock?

We had a strong gas smell. We changed the fuel pressure regulator and now its knocking.

We had to put on a new fuel presssure regulator. After they got it back together, cranked it up and started knocking. Then there was smoke coming from the back where the regulator is. Our so-in-law said it might be a something like an exhaust leak there. It was midnight so he really couldn't tell.
