1988 Chevrolet Camaro timing Belt

So my Camaros timing belt went out, i think it either broke when i turned it off or while i was trying to start the car again. How would i know if there is any valve damage or is.it safe for me to replace the timing belt? I am also asking this because a friend confused by saying that maybe the engine was non interference

Your engine is not an interference engine, but it uses a timing chain, not a belt.

So would there be any damage to the engine if it broke while trying to turn on the Car.

Interference engines get the valves bent when the pistons hit the open valves as they coast to a stop. That doesn't happen to non-interference engines like yours. Broken timing chains are pretty rare. You might want to look in the oil cap to see if the valve train is moving before you tear into the chain.
