how can the fuel pump keep running with the ignition turned off?

The fuel pump is running all the time even when the the ignition is off and the key removed. This problem only is resolved by disconnecting the battery.

The main/fuel pump relay may have failed. It is on the left hand side of the dash panel.

Replaced the fuel pump relay but still have the problem, the pump is still running when ever I reconnect the battery.

There is a relay control, called an Electronic Engine Control, EEC Module. It is located On the right side of the car on the fender apron, or on right kick panel under dash.

The Electronic Control Assembly, is part of the fuel pump crcuit.
This relay powers the fuel pump relay. Howver, you already have a new fuel pump relay and it stays on, so even if the EEC is stuck,"ON", it would not run-on as the fuel pump relay would cut the power.

Let me know what engine you have so I can get you the correct information from wiring diagrams.

This is a 302 v 6
fuel injected engin.

The EEC is the next most likely issue...even tough it seems like the pumps world not work.
It appears, if you have duel tank, there are 3 pumps, 1 per tank and 1 high pressure pump.
There is not much of a reason or through any research that i find that indicates other probable causes for this problem.
The EEC is a relay, so you can test it like a relay and be sure to test ground.
New EECs around around $1100.
