1987 Chevrolet El Camino starter housing cracked

Replaced a starter that had a cracked housing. (The nose) the new starter went in fine, but in three days the bendix kept spinning and not turning the fly wheel. I removed the new starter noticing the housing was cracked again. I also noticed that the bendix was not retracting back. I did not see any damage to the fly wheel. How could I tell if the fly wheel is bent or otherwise needing replacement?

You need to shim the starter motor you're to close and also check if the flywheel matches there's two different sizes-Let me know

tHANK YOU FOR A QUICK RESPONSE I will be trying that out tomorrow. The old starter did not have any shims installed I'll need to purchase a new starter and also the shims I will reply when I have completed the Job thanks again

With starter and spark plugs removed, mark drive plate with paint pen for starting reference, get an assistant to slowly turn the engine by hand and watch the flex plate as it rotates past the starter opening and look for signs of damage, setting up a dial indicator will show up any bend in the plate.
