ICM, need picture of how it mounts

Hi,

Could you let me know if this is a distributorless system or not? During this time period, several different designs were introduced.

Here is some of the info I have. See I anything correlates with what you have. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

Removing ignition coil cover. Models with internal coil--Typical

Units With Internal Coil
1. Remove the electrical connector from distributor cap by lifting retaining tabs.
2. Remove three coil cover attaching screws, then remove the cover, Fig. 1.
3. Remove coil attaching screws, then remove the ignition coil with leads from the distributor cap.
4. Remove coil arc seal.
5. Reverse procedure to install.

Units With External Coil
1. On 1982-85 Skylark, 1982-86 Citation, Omega, Phoenix, 1982-86 Celebrity, Century, Cutlass Ciera, 6000 & 1984-86 Cutlass Cruiser, proceed as follows:
a. Remove bolt securing radio capacitor to the coil.
b. Disconnect coil electrical connector and high tension lead.
c. Remove three coil mounting bolts, then remove the coil.
d. Reverse procedure to install.

2. On Chevette and 1000 models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove coil cover, then disconnect ignition switch to coil lead at coil.
b. Disconnect coil high tension lead, then remove coil retaining bolts and the coil.
c. Reverse procedure to install.

3. On Cavalier, CIMARRON, FIRENZA, 2000, Sunbird & Skyhawk models, proceed as follows:

Note: On 1982-86 FIRENZA, Skyhawk, Sunbird & 2000 with 1.8L OHC engine, the coil is located at the rear of the engine near the end of the cam cover.

a. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
b. Disconnect fuel pump lines at the fuel pump, then remove vacuum pipe retaining bracket nut at coil and position pipe aside.
c. Remove fuel pump, then remove coil mounting bolts.

MODULE REPLACEMENT
1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
2. Remove module retaining screws, then lift module upward.
3. Disconnect module electrical connector. Note position of the electrical connector prior to disconnecting. Remove the module from the distributor.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Check to ensure that the module electrical connector is installed in the proper position. If the module is not being replaced, do not wipe grease from the module or distributor base. If a new module is to be installed, coat module and distributor base with a pack of grease supplied with replacement module.

PICKUP COIL, REPLACE
1. Remove distributor from engine.
2. Mark the relationship of the distributor shaft and driven gear for reference during assembly.
3. Remove the roll pin and driven gear from the shaft.
4. Remove distributor cap, magnetic shield (if equipped), shaft, and rotor.
5. Remove C-washer on top of the pickup coil assembly, then disconnect pickup coil leads from the module and remove pickup coil assembly.
6. Reverse procedure to install.

HALL EFFECT SWITCH (IF EQUIPPED), REPLACE
1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
2. Remove switch retaining screws, then while pulling switch away, remove wiring connector. Remove switch.
3. Reverse procedure to install.

Note: After the Hall Effect switch is installed, spin the distributor shaft to ensure teeth do not touch. If necessary loosen, then re-tighten pickup coil teeth and Hall Effect switch to eliminate contact.

Thank you for your reply.
It does not have a distributor and it has 2 external roundish coils with 2 wires on each, on middle back side of engine with the ignition control module behind that and I guess the crank sensor behind that right on the block. Feels like 2 separate mounts one with small bolts or screws and the other right on the engine with larger bolts around a 12mm. It's all rectangle shaped I think with the 2 coils on top.
I'm hoping to feel my way without taking everything above off out of my visible way, if possible, if I know where all the separate bolt or screw mounts are and what each set is taking off etc.

Is it what is shown in the pic below? If so, you should be able to remove the 4 retaining bolts and it should come off.

No, this picture is not it. The basic part is not round like the pic. It is a rectangle mount about 6"+- by 3"+- mounted onto the back of the engine with no more than 4 approximately 12mm bolts. Then it feels like there is another smaller rectangle mount on top of that with 2, 3 or 4 much smaller bolts or screws. But I may be feeling a portion of just the coils mounting to the one mount with 2 bolts or screws for each? But on top of the one or two mounts there are 2 round coils with 2 spark plug wires on one side of each. These are not horizontal cylinders like the pic shows but are separate vertical mostly round knobs like a top hat shape. If you Google 1986 or 1987 Celebrity coils, you will see them come up.

I am assuming the long rectangle module about that size is under the coils and the crank sensor under that.

If this is not what comes up on a 1987, maybe the car is a 1986. But paperwork says 1987 ?

I might can feel my way to get to the (3 or 4) 12mm bolts to see how to take the whole thing loose and then see how to take wires and other things off. But it sure would be easier if I could get a pic view of it to know what to feel for. But it won't be too bad to have to take off injector and intake etc., to be able to see a little. (Transmission cuts off all access from the bottom side) - Thank you

Do you know the production date of the vehicle? If you look along the door jamb, you may find it.

What it sounds like you are describing is called a distributorless ignition control module (DIC) which is mounted under the actual coil. Is that what you are seeing?
