sounds like a coffee can full of bolts when starts, then smooths out, strong smell of gas, white smoke out of exhaust, leaking oil from engine behind harmonic balancer. 87 Chevy IROC with 213,000 miles.

You got some serious problema here, such as valve lifters, too rich of a mixture and a leaking crankshaft front seal

You think the block could be cracked Rasmataz? Sounds like the lifters pump up and smooth it out but the white smoke could be a head gasket or cracked block couldn't it?

Get it block and pressure tested to find out if its a blown headgasket, cracked head or block and an intake leak-
