87 bmw 325e engine rev up and down

when out of gear (in neutral), engine revs up and down continuously. A couple of times, I restarted the engine and it went into full throttle. After 5 seconds, then goes back to up and down revs.
can anyone help me diagnose this problem ????

The idle control valve/idle control unit are in need of replacement. It is a common problem with the Eta cars. It is about $700+ dollars for the cost of both of those units new, used parts are available at Autobahn dismantling (619)444-2290 talk to john or sean.
