1986 Ford Sierra engine problem

Hi my Sierra has tappet noise. Is it normal? And my second problem is it uses a lot of water and produce white smoke from the exhaust. Is this a top gasket that's blown or could there be another reason for this. The white smoke is the worst when I rev the car or pull away from a stop or a robot. Thank you for your time
