86 S-10 2.5L wont start, coil burning up when ignition is on, running or not, voltage at pink wire to coil is battery voltage, when replacing with a new coil, engine sputters for about a second and backfires, then does not try anymore and coil lets its smoke out. tried replacing module, coil 7 times, hall effect, ecm, no success, removed dist. and found black wire from module + pin going to the small ceramic box mounted under it broken. Tried to solder it back and no change. ?? I reckon perhaps the pickup coil is faulty or perhaps the ceramic box with the broken wire is a ballast resistor and soldering was unsuccessful. what do you think?

What ceramic box? Isn't this an HEI system?

no, Its an HEI-ESt system with the crank sensor inside the distributor on top of the pickup coil. I believe this is a california model. what appears to be a red ceramic box is under the pins of the module on the right side from the crank sensor.

I still don't know what the ceramic box is that you refer to. There are no resisters in the system. I would check for injector pulse and if you do have it, then the pick up coil is working.
