If my car overheated(and it wouldnt be the first time)and steam was coming from under the valve. Is head gasket going out. If i have to stop i have to put it in neutral or it will shut off. When im driving it, it moves just fine. I can get into the gas and it goes. I checked dip stick didnt see any oil. It didnt start running like this until overheated this last time, but this is also the first time steam come out from under valve cover.

MIGHT NOT BE OIL-------SAID THEY AIN'T SEEIN' IT ON THE DIPSTICK!

I THINK YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KEEP OIL IN THOSE THINGS.....AT LEAST UP TO THE MINIMUM MARK

PLEASE DEFINE. "RUNNING ROUGH" ---STAMMERING OR LOUD METALLIC SOUNDS?

AFTER IT COOLS DOWN ADVISE ON TO HOW MUCH WATER AND HOW MUCH OIL YOU HAD TO PUT IN IT TO GET IT BACK TO "FULL"

AND PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW OFTEN EACH ONE IS CHECKED TO BE THE CORRECT LEVEL

I meant that I didnt see any water on dipstick. It has enough oil. Running rough.... It runs like it has a missfire, but thats only when sitting still. After I get up to speed it run fine. What could have happen when it overheated to run like that.

BURNT VALVE(S), WARPED HEAD, WATER GETTING INTO THE CYLINDER(S), OTHER

IF THIS ISSUE STARTED DURING/ AFTER THE OVERHEAT, A COOLANT SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST, AND A COMPRESSION TEST MIGHT BE THE NEXT STEPS YOUR SHOULD SEEK

WRENCHTECH MAY HAVE OTHER GUIDELINES YOU MAY NEED TO LOOK INTO...I THINK HE'S A CHEVY KINDA GUY

Lets take the overheating out of it. What would make it idle rough and shut off when you stop besides a tune up. What kind of sensor or relays would make it do that.

when you overheated it, it may have blown a head gasket.

you need a leak down test from a shop to confirm. this will tell for sure if you damaged anything inside the motor.
