e brake light

I have a 1984 toyota van...the starter just went out, we replaced it and thats working fine but the ebrake light comes on all the time (almost always in low gear) and shifting into 1 has become really difficult??

Check that the switch at the base of the hand brake is adjusted correctly, also check brake fluid as i d believe that also is the low fluid warning light as well.
