1984 Jeep CJ7 Broken oil dipstick tube

I ANSWER MOST OF THE CJ QUESTIONS (SEE MAKES AND MODELS UNDER "QUESTIONS")(MAINLY 'CAUSE I'M REALLY INTO 'EM!)

HERE'S THE DEAL

YOU CAN PUT ANY "CJ" DIPSTICK TUBE YOU WANT TO INTO THE 258 ON A JEEP

HOWEVER, YOU GOTTA USE THE DIPSTICK THAT GOES WITH IT!

OTHER "AMC" VEHICLES USED THE SAME ENGINE, JUST A DIFFERENT OIL PAN AND DIPSTICK (SO DON'T USE ONE OF THEM!) MY '77 CJ 5 NOW HAS THE 258 OUT OF A "HORNET", I HAD TO RE-USE MY PAN AND DIPSTICK AND DIPSTICK TUBE

OVER A FEW MONTHS TIME, I REBUILT THE ENGINE (TIME/ FUNDS) I CONTINUED TO DRIVE MY OLDER MOTOR. I DID A 5 HOUR SWAP ON A SATURDAY IN MY DAD'S CARPORT- NO DOWN TIME!

you need the correct tube with a shorter tube the dipstick would go in farther into the pan and not read correctly.

Great. Thank you for the information and pics. I currently have the long tube.. It curves up and runs parallel to the valve cover. I'm thinking that I can get a short tube and stick like the one in your picture. I will try to order one this week. Once I get it installed I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.

Yes, the home make tool makes sense. I believe I can make one without a problem. This Jeep is a new project so I'm sure I will have a lot of questions. Thank you for offering to help. I will be following back up once I get the oil tube replaced. I ordered one last night. It should be here in about a week.

Ok, I got the old d-stick tube out and replaced it with a new tube (with matching stick) that fits a 1987-1990 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4.2L. I mounted the tube, adjusted the depth so that it reads correctly, and everything seems fine.. One problem, the new tube has a smaller diameter. Do you have any suggestions on have I can seal the small gap?

HOW BIGGA GAP YOU GOT?

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DIAL CALIPER OR MICROMETER

CAN YOU GIMME A SIZE OF THE HOLE IN THE BLOCK AND OF THE TUBE USING THE ENDS OF DRILL BITS?

I got in the garage this weekend. Below are the measurements using Vernier Calipers:

old tube = .3175
new tube = .2285

different = .089

I'm attempting to use gasket sealer to fill the gap. I put it around the tube before sliding it in to the block. Did this last night.. I hope to check it sometime this week.

I WAS SORTA THINKING OF

CRAMMING ABOUT 1/2 TO 1 INCH OF "BAR SOAP" INTO THE ENGINE END OF THE TUBE

THEN FILLING AN INCH OR TWO OF WATER ON TOP OF THAT FROM THE TOP END (NOT THE WHOLE TUBE)

SHOVE IT IN THE FREEZER

MONITOR SWELLING PROGRESS EVERY THIRTY MINUTES OR SO USING YOUR CALIPERS

JUST DON'T FORGET ABOUT IT!

HAVE SOMETHING READY (LIKE A BRAZING ROD) TO KNOCK OUT THE ICE AND SOAP

REMEMBER ONCE IT WARMS UP- IT WILL EXPAND A FEW THOUSANDTHS- THUS YOU MIGHT SHOVE IT IN PLACE WHILE IT IS THE "COLD PERFECT SIZE"- EXPANSION MIGHT TAKE THE PLACE OF DRIVING IT IN

"JB WELD" MAKES MANY EPOXY TYPE PRODUCTS TOO

MOST OF 'EM THAT STAND OUT IN THE PARTS STORES ARE THE 2 LIQUIDS IN A 2 COMPARTMENT SYRINGE. SOME ARE FOR "MARINE" USE ETC. THESE ARE REALLY RUNNY WHEN YOU MIX THEM. (I DON'T RECOMMEND THOSE TYPES)

GOOD NEWS THOUGH! THEY DO MAKE A "2 PUTTY" TYPE (ONE DARKER, ONE LIGHTER) YOU KNEAD EQUAL AMOUNTS TOGETHER AND YOU MAY HAVE QUITE SOME TIME BEFORE IT HAS THE CHEMICAL REACTION AND "SUDDENLY" GETS HARD.

IF BUILT UP SOMEWHAT ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE TUBE, THIS TYPE WON'T JUST RUN ON DOWN INTO THE BLOCK, AND WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A LARGER SEAL, INSTEAD OF A THIN "POLYURETHANE TYPE" FILM AS WITH THE RUNNY KIND
