stuck door latch

Maybe a slim-jim would work, to unlock?

the door is partially closed after i moved latch mechanism to see why door was previously rattling when closed. i closed the door, and the latch will not release, like in the safety position, and moving the handle only moves one part ot mechanism, but will not release. the door is ajar, caught on the first position, but i can not get the mechnanis to release from the pin. is there any hope of getting door open myself, or will i need to go to a body shop, as suggested by my mechanic, to get additional help?

Can you get it to fully shut, then try again? I don't know what else without pulling the door panel? I can't remember pulling a door panel with door shut?
