It sounds like the regulator may be bad.

See pic There are rollers that are attached to the regulator. Check them to make sure the are good.

Remove the battery cables, clean them and retighten them. Also, check to make sure the ground from the battery to the engine is clean and tight.

I am proud that you are working on this. If you are getting a click and the terminals are clean, I would suggest having the starter tested. It may be bad.

Let me know your questions.

battery is not dead, shows charged up, when jumped it starts very fast, connections are all clean, when multi voltage tester was put on alternator,it showed 9.48,battery was 12.40,it started right up earlier after charged,i thought i would wait til morning to see what happens. any thoughts? i have to take off the top half of the door panel to get to the regulator, also both inside door handles have broken off,can i take the broken handles off myself,it just has a bolt running through a spring that is holding the handle

it was the alternator, they want 25.00 for one door handle, which seems a little extreme
