Engine will not start if it is turned off after perhaps 3 minutes or so. Does not matter if it ran until completely warmed up or if it was only for a brief time. Waiting for a while, it will start. I have not timed how long the minimum wait is, but as an example, I moved it from one place in the yard to another, turned it off and it would not start. Another example; I drove it about 8 miles. turned it off, waited about 15 to 20 minutes and got in and it would not start but after about another 3 to 5 minutes it did.

Several things could cause this, loss of spark, low or no fuel pressure, sensor issues... However, when I think back, I remember replacing several EEC relays. The EEC relay stands for Electronic Engine Control. It is located under the hood in the relay box on the left side toward the rear of the fender. Just for the heck of it, remove that relay and match it with one (same part number) from a different circuit. Switch them and see if the problem goes away. If it does, replace the bad relay.

Let me know what you find. Also, it's been several years since I worked on an 81, so I hope I'm correct as to the relay box location. If I'm not, it will be under the hood on one of the inner fenders.
