Installed brake booster but adjustment is a complete mystery. Counterclockwise rotation of rod to extend?

Depending on which direction you are looking. If you look from the rod side onto the adjustment nut, it should be clockwise to shorten.

There is no adjustment nut. It is a rod with a clevis hole in it.

If the rod is non adjustable, you would need to adjust the pedal height.

If the difference in length is too much, you would have to add spacers between the booster to mounted point.

Found out that it was not adjustable. The difference is too little! I have it working now but I'm used to the height it was previously. I might, in some manner, relocate the pin. The scenario where it is too long would be easily corrected by shimming the booster out as you suggested.

As long as you have clearance, it is ok. Insufficient free travel would be a problem.
