If it is a automatic you want to check the fluid level. bring it up to warm up temperature in park and check the fluid level. Also the gear selectors does it move to easy it could of came off from its connection. So that needs to be looked at

It is a manual , yes the gears move but does not go into a gear. I am a women and have no experience in cars, i have to try and fix it myself, i dint have money as i am a pensioner , my son will be home at 5 he also has no experience but i am sure we will get it right with your help. Most probably the clutch has failed. That would mean dropping the transmission to have it replaced, not an easy job.
