Recently i was rear ended driving my 81 Mercedes and since then i was unable to shift gears, and unable to shift from park to drive. i believe the shifter rod was disconnected from the transmission. The car cranks as always but won't move. i know this isn't much information to go on but hopefully you can help. I checked the bushings and the one closest to the shifter was off. i replaced the bushing but after crawling underneath the car i noticed the shifter rod was loose yet still attached from the transmission. so in order to save a head ache from taking apart anything else my question. is what do i do from here. its a very nice garage kept car i and i would be highly grateful for any professional advice you have to offer. If you need any more details please let me know.thank you. i have several more questions but first all i want the car mobile before anymore work.

You will need to jack up the car and check that the transmission mounts are ok, in the collision the mounts may have failed and the transmission has moved and the selectors may not be able to shift, start here.

Disconnect the transmission selector at the box and see if you can select all gears there by hand.

Has the drive shaft been shunted into the back of the transmission? If so this may have done some internal damage.

i have no idea. how can i tell?

so far, when i crank the car i know park works, then when i shift out of park into drive or reverse the wheels aren't spinning. (could this be a drive shaft problem or something other than the transmission)

also, when i was rear ended the car still drove for a week straight it was only till one night i was driving up a hill and i felt a sudden jerk under the car and since then ive had to tow it.
