Today I changed my oil for the season, changing from Penzoil synthetic to AmsOil, and using the AmsOil engine flush as recommended by my local mechanic. After the successful oil change, I checked the other fluids, and also went to clean my carburetor as normal, and when I took the air cleaner off, it made a very loud hissing noise. Sprayed the carburetor as per usual, put air cleaner back on, and proceeded to drive it a few miles to see how everything worked, and the new oil seemed to actually quiet the entire motor noise down, and the car ran smoothly without any issue, however I am concerned about the hissing,.
As for background, I bought the car seven years ago, and between switching to synthetic oils and using carb cleaner and gas treatments, the car actually runs better every year. However, I only drive it six months of the year during the warm seasons, and it does sit for six months in harsh North Dakota cold, sometimes -30 F, and some days -20 F for a high. Ive been sober for a long time, but six years ago I ran the car into a television as a drunken dare at a party at my place, smashing the TV and cutting some vacuum lines and a power steering line, the power steering was fixed, but the headlamp cover lines never were. However, there was never any performance problems from the smashing, and as noted, it has actually run better in every year of service since.
Why would this sound come from an old carb now, and with no other signs of performance issues, should I be worried and take some action?
