1979 CADILLAC SEVILLE 5.7L GAS ENGINE. FACTORY TIMING CAM GEAR LOST TEETH AND CHAIN CAME OFF. RESET TIMING AND REPLACED GEARS AND CHAIN WITH STEEL GEARS. HAD TIMING MARKS LINED UP DOT TO DOT, WITH NUMBER 1 CYL. ON COMPRESSION STOKE. CAR WOULD NOT START. DISBT. WAS 180 OUT, RESTABBED THE DISBT. 180, AND CAR STARTED. HAD A LACK OF POWER AND A LOW SPEED MISFIRE. I HAVE RE-TIMED THE TIMING CHAIN 4 TIMES AND THE CAM GEAR IS 180 OFF WHEN I HAVE COMPRESSION IN #1 CYL. TRIED TO RESET AND CAM GEAR KEEPS BEING 180 OFF WHEN I HAVE COMPRESSION.

That's not possible, unless the distributor gear is stripped. You just aren't checking it correctly.

I sure hope you removed the oil pan and got all those broken pieces of the gear out because if you didn't you'll be buying an engine when they plug up the oil pick up screen.
