installing pilot bushing

It will be a tight fit, You can use a Short, Snug fitting bolt to drive it in, Threaded part in the hole.

Can you compare to the old one for proper size?

Insure the new one will slide Snuggly (It Should twist and turn freely) over the Transmission Input Shaft's Snout, prior to installation.

It appears to be the same size but it sure doesn't want to go in very easy. I ordered the bushing from quadratec and it says it's for a '76 cj5. I'm going to try using a bolt near the same size as the hole the shaft fits in, we'll see what happens.

If you will take the New bushing and the old one to a auto parts store, I feel sure they would gladly use their calipers to verify they are identical in size or not.

Make sure it will go over the tip end of your tranny input shaft too!

How about a longer bolt, with a nut ran down close to the end. Let the protruding threads be inside of the bushing....but not so far as to bottom out in the crankshaft hole.

The "Long-ness" of the bolt will sorta give you something to hold on to to keep you straight as you drive it in.

If your nut is too big around to continue driving the bushing "Home", after it's started well, use a Deep socket, the same size, or a "tad bit" smaller to tap it on into it's final destination.

I really hope you didn't let the rear bearing adapter (Gear Assembly, on the rear of the tranny) slide out when you pulled the transfer case off of the tranny.

And do not let it slide back, when you re-install!

If it Does/ Did.....You just lost the needle bearings in between the input shaft and the main shaft..........Time to pull the Tranny apart! No other way to get them back in!
