bushing on engine by flywheel

As one looks at the engine from the flywheel side, with the clutch plate off, you can see a bushing in the center of the where the flywheel attaches on. This bushing is partially broken offf in a half moon on the outside part but is intact on the inside where the spindle fits into it. Should I replace the bushing and if so how would one go about getting the old one out since it looks like it's in there pretty tight.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE DESCRIBING THE "PILOT BUSHING"

THIS IS WHAT CENTERS, AND HOLDS THE INPUT SHAFT OF A MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN ALIGNMENT---IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!

SEEN THEM REMOVED SEVERAL WAYS (SOME NOT REAL DESIRABLE!)

A SLIDE HAMMER WITH INSIDE GRABBER ATTACHMENTS WORKS WELL

I FASHIONED A DEVICE ONCE--1 ARM OFF OF A 3 JAW PULLER, ATTACHED TO A 2 FOOT LONG (OR SO) LENGTH OF CHAIN WRAPPED AROUND A 2 LBS HAMMER HEAD-----SAME PRINCIPLE AS THE SLIDE HAMMER, I HOOKED THE PULLER ARM INSIDE THE BUSHING, AND SORTA JERKED THE CHAIN WITH THE HAMMER HEAD.

SEEN.... FILL ENTIRE VOID OF THE CRANK WITH GREASE, USING A METAL DOWEL ETC, THAT FITS INSIDE THE BUSHING WELL, BUT WILL SLIDE IN AND OUT EZily, GIVE THE DOWEL A SHARP "SMACK" AND "HYDRAULIC ACTION" OF THE GREASE WILL PUSH IT OUT.....WEAR GOGGLES, YOU WILL BE SPLATTERED WITH GREASE!

C'MON, GIVE ME SOMETHING REAL TO FIX!.....WHAT'S YOUR MISSION THIS TIME?
