engine losing power as I drive

I have a 1976 Dodge Travco Motorhome with a 440 V8 engine and its losing power as I drive. If I remove the air intake and filter I get some power back but not enough to take it over 40 mph. Any suggestions

Check the exhaust system for restriction could be the catalytic converter clogged-up =start here and let me know
