Recently bought a 1974 Beetle that will not shut off with the ignition switch. Have replaced the ignition switch. It shut off with the switch a dozen times but now will not. What should I check?

you do need the key, you have to put the key in the slot and then with a pin or straight piece of wire push it in the little hole, then turn the key counter clock wise.

remove 6mm allen bolt securing switch, signal, wiper housing. Remove wipe/signal switch.Keep tension off steering lock[wiggle steering wheel].Its tight, but pry back steering lock pin from colmn,Pull on housing[you may have to persuade with a soft hammer ]You will see a phillips screw securing the ignition switch in place. The ignition tumbler has a clip that needs to be depressed after drilling through the housing to remove.Look at the new tumbler to figure drilling dimentions

if i remember correctly,,, there's a little pin inside the
switch....you have to put the key in and turn it to the "on" position...
the unit should just come out...
after the preliminaries of course

you do mean the switch on the steering column right?
