how do I identify a chevy engine block

I know that my camaro does not have the original engine, but I'd like to know what vehicle it came from. The serial number on the left front of the block has been sanded and covered over multiple times and is not legible. Did chevy stamp these numbers anywhere else on the engine? How else would I find out what vehicle and year my engine is from?
