vw beetle 1200 engine

i'm pretty sure while having body work done on my bettle that a different engine was put back in my body. there are a few things not consistent with my old motor. i'd like to know where i find the serial number om my engine so i can check it out for sure that way before i proceed.

If my memory is correct numbers stamped on left side of housing for generator
