Having trouble with starting system. Will not start with key (starter makes noise), but will start with a push/pull. Replaced the starter with a new one ... same problem, same noise. Replaced the starter relay with a new one .... same problem, same noise. When I did more checking, found what looked like a broken/bent washer inside where the starter gear goes into the flywheel. Any suggestions of what the issue could be or what else to check and how to fix the problem?

Engine is a 300 straight 6 with approximately 31,000 miles on it. 4-speed manual with granny gear. No a/c of course. Any suggestions would be a great help!!!

Will not start with key (starter makes noise), What kind of noise? You sure the starter motor is not to far from the flywheel-making a grinding noise-Let me know
