Hi there, the motor in question is a 60's vanguard straight 6. It hasn't been going for 39 years. I've got the motor going but there seems to be a problem with the oil pump. It won't pick up the oil despite me carrying out previous advice by priming the pump with oil through the hole where the pressure sender is fitted.

1 question might be whether the oil pump is turning or not. can you see it operate thru hole?

The pressure relief valve nay be stuck, i do think that you will be better off dropping the sump and checking the pump manually, if you keep cranking dry you will damage bearings, if it is just a priming problem, try cutting the oil with diesel, if you manage to get pressure up, this will not hurt the engine as long as you do a full oil change and filter afterwords.
