Car listed above is an i4. Having an issue with the transmission, constant whine from engine start through park, neutral, 1,2 and 3rd. Goes away when it shifts to 4th and 5th.
Its an automatic. Had an issue where it wasn't shifting right, cleaned solenoids A, B and C, not shifting issue went away. Solenoid tube mesh was blocked. Drained and filled with fluid twice. 1st drain and fill was with Castrol Transmax ATF, The sound almost went away, was reduced greatly but whenever the engine and transmission got hot, kept shifting really hard. As in hard enough for me to check rear view mirror to see if someone hit me from behind! when cold, was shifting normally. Drained and filled again with Honda DW1 and hard shifts have gone away but whine remains. Changed transmission oil filter as well. (External one.)
Any ideas would be very helpful... Thanks.

Good morning,

The fact there was debris on the end of the solenoids tells me something is worn out inside sending metal through the system.

The whining is most likely from the front pump in the transmission.

I attached a chart below for noise for you to view.

Hi Roy,

Thank you for your reply. I also thought it might be the pump or the torque converter on its way out. What baffles me is why is it only whining in P,N,R,1,2 and 3, but doesn't make any sound as soon as it shifts into 4 and 5.

Also, there were no metal shavings, not even in the oil drain magnet. More like it was crud in the mesh filters. The main external oil filter was also blocked (changed it to a new one afterwards), leading me to think that the car probably never had its transmission fluid changed. The fluid that was drained out in the first drain and refill was quite literally black in color. Not red, not pink, not even dark brown.

The way the main shaft is mounted and the bearings it rides on.

The fluid color tells me something is burning to cause the fluid to turn black.
