I was recently told the catalytic converters on the car listed above were bad and needed to be changed. I just started buying parts online when fixing on the car and it seems to be cheaper, but it has become a headache trying to find information on certain parts. Looking online I cannot seem to narrow down how many catalytic converters on on the car and what the names are ie. bank 1, front, rear and all that ? Please help.

Other Category problem
2001 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 99800 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
First, I'm wondering how many catalytic converters are on my 2001 Nissan Maxima? I have been told there are two by one mechanic and three by another. I have been told that they need to be replaced. Do I need them ALL replaced? How does a mechanic check to see which one may be giving me problems? My car seems to be bogged down when trying to accelerate, sometimes it won't speed up at all when I press the gas pedal completely to the floor. This is especially the case when my car is still cold or when trying to climb hills.

Thank you.

i belive there are two on your vehicle. they can be found out if they are bad by a digital pyrometer, or by the o2 sensors located after the catalytic converter.

or he may decide to hook up a vaccum guage and idle the car at 2500 rpm's for a few minutes and if the accellerator is constantly being pushed to maintain the rpm's or the vaccuum slowly but steadily goes down, then you have a restricted catalytic converter.

Have a service engine soon light that has been constantly on for a while now.
Was read via scanner by one mechanic who said it's the catalytic converter and needs to be replaced, or the car won't pass emissions inspection.
The car's performance has been fine, however when I previously brought it to the same mechanic a month ago regarding the check engine light, he said it was the O2 sensors and ended up replacing all 3 of them for about $600.
Does this seem right? Did the sensors really need to be replaced the first time, if the scanner was also reading "catalytic" problem back then?

Secondly,
would an aftermarket catalytic converter be a good idea for this vehicle, with the year and mileage on it?

Thank you,
Chris

what is the code its throwing??? if its a cat effiecency code, it will be a P0420.... a cat doesnt gp bad on its own.... i suggest having all o2 sensors replaced prior, as they are what tells the computer if the cat is working or not.... as you already did this, then the cat is most likely no good and does need to be replaced.... as far as aftermarket goes, that should work just fine. keep me posted.

I have a 2001 nissan maxima and my cat converter is clogged. How much will I be paying in the shop to get it fixed? Also is there any way I could get it to start so I could get it to the shop?

There are 3 cayalytic converter on vehicle.

OEM catalytic converter is listed at $764.37 and $ 845.14 depending on which one. Book time for replacement is from 0.7 to 1.8 hour depending on how many is being replaced.

After market catalytic conveters are available and would be at a much lower price.

If the catalytic converter is clogged, you need to remove it to be able to start.
